For much of America’s recent political and culture history, the two sides of debates have been called “conservative” and “liberal.” Advocates and critics alike have either proudly displayed their respective loyalties or attacked with passion their nemesis. Moderates have sought to soften the distinction for the sake of peace.
The problem is that these labels are not broad enough to describe the grandeur of what is dividing the thinking in the country. In the twenty-first century, the labels of right and left are best boiled down to the simplistic ideologies of Ayn Rand and Karl Marx, respectively. Those points are helpful, but something else needs to be drawn up.
While the political scene is debated along economic lines (capitalism and redistribution), the overarching philosophies that is dividing families, churches, and parties is related much more to fundamental human existence, beyond mere economics. The division is over natural human boundaries.
Historically, humans have been divided among three major lines. Racial and cultural, sex, and wealth. Different ethnic groups produced different cultures, some bringing brutal cruelty and others giving rise to amazing benefits. As an example, the legal code of Moses allowed the nation of Israel to rise above the pagan cultures of its neighbors. Men and women were held as different, functioning in an ordered patriarchy, and some owned property and others worked for those owners, which still goes on today between employers and employees.
The major cultural and intellectual movement of the mid- twentieth century and onward has been to deliberately erase those natural boundaries to achieve an absolute equality of humanity as a whole. The concept of nation races, sexes, and ownership are eroded to be replaced by common existence of humanity. It is believed that by blurring these differences, a peaceful utopia can be achieved. This runs along the line of Marxist thought, which holds that human conflict is caused by the existence of economic classes.
A better set of terms to describe this transition would be “classical” and “progressive.” Western Christian Civilization has functioned for the past two millenniums under a classical state of human existence, with natural boundaries understood as a part of human existence and accepted. Progressives, however, are pursuing a state of human existence where no natural boundaries are recognized.
Conservatives are losing ground because they have lost the classical perspective on human existence. In the cacophony of accusations through manufactured terms like “racism” and “sexism” classical thought has been abandoned in the areas of culture and sex, leaving only economics as the sole arena in which to battle. However, this is a losing proposition because wealth is not the foundation of a sound and stable society. The colorful chaos that progressive thought is building in the name of equality and diversity will swallow a man’s livelihood whole and that of every fellow citizen.
Eventually, the classical understanding of humanity will reemerge. Progressive thought will not lead to a scientific utopia, but to a new era of spiritual-sexual paganism, dark and cruel. Such cultures ultimately die slow deaths or exist in weak obscurity if they are not conquered by another civilization. Until then, Christianity will have to endure an emerging epoch of dark pagan history. Yet, it is in the darkness that light shines brightest.
